Divine Appointments II

Being in the hospital was pretty cool. I was on a morphine drip for a while so I was feeling NO pain. I think I got in there around 8 pm or so - again I don't remember much because I was doped up. The nurses and nurses aides at Sacred Heart Medical Center were so great! They totally took care of me and were so nice. They had to come in every few hours to take my blood pressure and check on my IV. Even so I got a good nap in and around 11 that night I was told that my surgery would be at 10 or so the next day. I called my parents and told them and then I pretty much chilled for the next 10 hours. I think I dozed off and woke up several times, watched Animal Planet on tv for an hour or two.

When the sun came up I woke up for a little bit but then fell back to sleep until they came in and told me I was going to be wheeled to surgery. My family made it just in time and went up to the OR waiting room to wait for me.

Anaesthesia (did I spell that right...yes, I did, I checked) is the craziest thing! I remember listening to the nurses talking about how they were going to get my fat butt on the operating table and then I remember them doing it with more ease than I thought they would. I remember the anaesthetician telling me she was going to put me on some oxygen and then all of a sudden I heard someone yelling, "STEPHANIE, YOU'RE OUT OF SURGERY NOW, CAN YOU HEAR ME?" The only thing I could say was, "I NEED SOME ALBUTEROL, CAN YOU GET ME SOME? I NEED TO COUGH OR BREATHE BUT I CAN'T. CAN YOU GET ME SOME ALBUTEROL?" Someone asked someone else if I was allowed to have it and then the other person said I was allowed...it was very comical but also very scary in a way because I really couldn't breathe and I needed my inhaler - the Albuterol. I have decided that I hate anaesthesia... I hate it more than I hate spelling it. I felt SO out of control! I was really groggy and my throat hurt from being intibated... ugh. I think that was the roughest part of the whole deal!

When I got back to my room it was 1:05 PM. I'd been in surgery for about 2 and a half hours. I wasn't hurting but I was a little uncomfortable. My family wasn't there in the room so that was weird but I pretty much just drifted in and out of coherency... if that's a word... so it was okay. I thought maybe they'd gone for lunch. Around 2:30 they came in and we found out that they had been waiting for me and I'd been waiting for them. The people who were supposed to call them ended up dropping the ball. BUT! That was the only thing that went awry. Everything else was fine. I told my mom and sister-in-law to go to lunch and I would take a nap.

Somewhere during all of this someone came in and told me what to do about my wounds, told me to push the button if I needed to pee, and also told me that the goal for the day was "gas." Yeah, I said it. My goal for the day was a fart. LOL. I'm totally laughing even now.

Okay, the laughing hurt me so I'm going to have to finish this later...time to take a pill.

Love ya,
Steph
