Lying is Bad, Folks

Current mood: sad

Lying is bad, folks. Lying is selfish and mean and immature. Lying is also cowardly. Lying is like acid or demolition or a computer virus. It instantly erodes things, and destroys things, and corrupts things. If you lie in a relationship it can ruin that relationship, regardless of the nature of the relationship or the lie. If you lie on the job you can get fired. If you lie in court you can go to jail. Lying gets you in trouble. But lying also reveals things. When you put acid on certain surfaces it kind of cleans it and you can see, for the first time, exactly what is underneath all the crap. The unfortunate thing is that a lot of times you find more crap and realize that what you thought might be valuable is really just junk: worthless. Lying is like demolition in the same way. When you tear down the broken structure you've been looking at for so long, you find that you suddenly have a clearer view, but a clearer view of what? More broken down structures? Lying and computer viruses are similar because they both reveal that you're not safe in areas where you thought you were.

One lie is a mistake, after that you're a LIAR.

I've lied before, lots. I realize that it's sucky being on either side. If the Holy Spirit is your guide, and you're in fairly constant contact with Him, you will feel it when He immediately attacks your conscience. You're not just sorry, you're miserable. Hold onto that feeling and savor it because you're not alone. The person you lied to is feeling that way, too. Get on your knees, someplace quiet and alone, and talk to God about it. Don't make a scene to someone else, talk to God first. Then go talk to the person you lied to, if they will see you, and tell them face to face that you'll try to make it up to them by earning back their trust. It's hard. Its hard to face them and its hard earning trust back. Be ready to hear them say, "We'll see," or, "Whatever." Be brave, though, and bite the bullet. It's the only way to make things better. God is good. If you take it up with Him, He will help you. He'll help you stop lying and He'll help you fix the relationship you messed up.

I love you all, especially the liars. Please stop making it so difficult, though.
